The Four Elements – Fire Earth Air Water
Arthur C Clark once said that “magic is just something that science hasn’t discovered yet.” The universe is so complex that it is no wonder that there is further room for discovery. The human body is 96% composed of four elements - Oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. Who knows if it is linked or just a coincidence that western astrology also has four basic building blocks. The 12 Signs of the Zodiac are divided into four elements – fire, earth, air and water.
You could be predominantly one element, or you could be a combination. If you are mainly Fire – Aries, Leo or Sagittarius – then you are fiery, full of spirit, independent in a quiet or outgoing manner. You have initiative, the ability to get things going. Earth is as it sounds – down to earth, sensible with common sense. Earth Signs are practical, earthy and attracted to the natural world. Air – Gemini, Libra and Aquarius - is linked to movement, connections and communications. And Water – Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces - is flowing, emotions ideally flowing naturally. If you are predominantly Water then you are also empathetic, nurturing and caring in the same way water nourishes our bodies, and waterways feed our souls.
But what if you are a combination of two or more elements. The more elements then the more balanced you are likely to be. However, do you know your combination? The idea for this article came to me when flying from Melbourne to Adelaide. The pilot had two tries at landing the plane, reminding me of how much I detest flying. I have no Air in my chart, having mainly a combination of Fire and Earth. This gives me a lot of initiative and practical application but an adversity to talking about action. Meetings are not my thing. Just give me a job and let me get on with it. ‘Less talk, more action’ is one of my catchphrases. What about you? How does Fire and Earth work together for you if you have this in your Birth Chart?
Fire and Air are different indeed. If you have a combination of Fire and Air then you are likely to love flying, chatting or working on the plane, and getting to your destination in the fastest manner. You would also enjoy discussing ideas, holding meetings and constant movement.
When you have a mix of Fire and Water this emphasises the vulnerable side to your personality. You are a natural empath, the ability to take charge in an emotional crisis. It can also mean that you have a fear of landing in hot water and so a tendency to be anxious. If you want someone who thinks on their feet and acts quickly then this is the person to engage.
Earth and Air gives you wind beneath your wings when it comes to achieving practical results. However, you could also tend to procrastinate when you don’t have a clear direction. You need an activity that helps keep you firmly grounded while also able to pursue your ideas.
Air and Water combined and balanced are the ingredients that we need to live on planet earth. When both are flowing well you are a balanced individual expressing yourself well, a natural advocate for yourself and others. You are likely to speak out against unfairness. Challenges can arise if you feel confined or trapped. Then you and others can feel the pressure building and watch the stream rise.
It seems appropriate to end this article with a quote from the musical group Earth, Wind and Fire who sang: You're a shining star, No matter who you are, Shining bright to see, What you could truly be.”
What about air and water, just about even?
